Her plate empty, Amy sat back. “That was so good. I’d eat more, but I’m stuffed,” she said.

“Well, you better have saved room for dessert. I have an apple pie waiting for us in the pantry,” Miranda said, getting up and starting to clear the table.

“Uhhh, you’d better give me an hour or so before you bring it out,” Amy said. “I might explode if I eat any more.”

“I’m with Amy,” Ryan said, rubbing his stomach. “But don’t worry if there’s apple pie around here, it won’t go untouched.”

Between the three of them, it didn’t take long to get the kitchen cleaned up and ready for the morning. They ended up back at the table, Ryan sitting next to her, his hand wrapped around hers. “Now that we’re all fed, we should talk,” he said, looking over at her. “I was thinking that we could head up into the mountains for a few days if that’s okay with you. Maybe if you get away from everything, you’ll remember something. I’m not sure what else to do.”

She studied him for a minute. “I remembered something today,” she said. “It wasn’t anything important, but when Jimmy was talking about that teacher you hated, I remembered a woman a lot like him. I don’t know where it came from, but the memory was there.”

“Did you remember anything else?” Ryan asked.

“No, not really,” she said. “There are just vague images of classrooms, the other girls, stuff like that.”

“Other girls?” Miranda asked.

She nodded. “The other students were all girls, and they were all in uniform,” she said, excitement welling up inside her. “It’s finally starting to come back.”

Ryan nodded. “Maybe we should try your clothes now,” he said. “You might remember something from before the crash. At this point, just about anything would help.”

“I think I’m ready now,” she said, her stomach clenching with anticipation, afraid that she might not like what she remembered but ready to face it.

Miranda got up, brought the trash bag over to the table, and put it down in front of her, her face scrunched up from the smell. “I don’t think these can be saved. We’ll never get the smell out of them,” she said, opening up the bag and sliding the clothes out onto the table.

Amy stared down at them, remembering the crash. “I don’t think I could ever wear them again anyway,” she finally said, then shook her head. “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing but the crash.”

Feeling herself beginning to shake, she looked away from the stained pants and shirt. “I don’t think they’re going to help. Let’s just get rid of them.”

Miranda scooped the bundle up off the table and scrunched it up to stuff it back into the bag but stopped. “Wait, I think I heard something,” she said.

Rustling the clothes around again, they all heard the sound of paper crackling. “There must be something in one of the pockets,” Ryan said, holding out his hands. “Let me look.”

A few seconds later, a smile spread across his face, and he held up a folded piece of paper triumphantly.
